In todays blog at VFX institute Kolkata we will discuss about the usage of VFX in the movie VENOM.
In the end of 2018 ‘’ Venom’’ audiences were given the impression that Cletus Kasady’s execution went wrong thereby he escaped from San Quentin prison.
So in the year 2021 Venom Let there be Carnage an American Superhero film featuring Marvel Comics character Venom was released.
It was also the first time audiences saw a glimpse at a Ravencroft Institute a residence of criminally insane and home to various spider man criminal.
‘’Venom Let there be carnage” has shown Thomas Hardy as symbolistic alien coming back as Eddie Brook, and the coming back of Woody Harrelson as serial killer Kasady also housing his own symbiote Carnage.
After escaping from jail Cletus returned to Ravencroft Institute, this time only to unite with lost love Shriek.
It generally opens up as love story .This was a difficult challenge for the VFX artists as story wise one wants Cletus to be softer and gentler.Though actually he is a crazy and violent character.
One sequence in the story is referred to as ‘’Love fuelled joy ride” by the VFX team as two of them are chased by security guards and in true Carnage style they are just creating chaos and mayhem.
DNEG has delivered 750 shots across 20 sequence in the movie Venom 2.
The biggest challenge of DNEG was undoubtedly just developing the Carnage asset.
The studio was given the charge of building the Carnage asset.
The studio mainly did the job during concept phase and built the asset which was shared with other vendors.
In the movie Venom 2 key art and concept art was mixed in order to help filmmakers and studio visualize the effects very much way ahead of time.
The VFX artist in the movie utilized VFX to take the story forward and not in a unjustified way.
The concept art was basically applied in jail break sequence.The movie takes on a few tones.One is a soft tone where one finds Shriek.
Shriek introduces us to Carnage. Then the tentacles are coming out.
The tentacle movement changed drastically giving way to destruction as two of them eloped.
They were now founded in fighting mode. In the movie itself the tentacles were imagined as vine.
The VFX artists also got the idea how animals use weapon in nature.
The idea of the way by which a scorpion moves its tail behind its head and crawls forward in this threatening way .
Besides Serkis , the VFX artist in the movie ‘’Venom 2’’ collaborated very much with DP Bob Richardson.
DP Bob Richardson he made a nice canvas for everything.
The Ravencroft sequence was a easy task for the VFX artists in the movie because he was in a state of transfiguration and change.
At one point of time we see his destroyed head, other time we see his full transformation, and at other times we see he bringing out his tentacles and spawning out.
The VFX artist sculptured a maquette that served as a character reference which helped everyone to design the VFX specially to determine the lighting effect.
The VFX artists from the beginning knew that Carnage transformation would be the most difficult shots on the show.
The development involved a good cooperation among animation, creature and FX department which would help to build a complex FX simulation between plate performance and digital double elements from lighting and computer department.
The VFX artists wanted the audience to be very much satisfied with the character.
The VFX artists also went through the comic books , to know how different artist has approached the characters.
One of sequence was inspired from comic book but it appeared too horrible to the audience.
The VFX team in the movie wanted to show Carnage putting down his tongue down to somebody’s throat in order to kill them.
Actually in the comics it was shown that he does it with his tentacles.But in the end the sequence was changed to fit the big screen.
While creating Carnage movement the VFX team, went through Lindenmayar System a mathematical formula keeping in mind that his growth was symbiotic with the environment.
If one observes vividly the different scenes in Venom he will see how he tries to imitate objects in the environment.
The main difference between Carnage and Venom is while Venom has penetrated intoEddies body, the VFX artist is of the opinion that Carnage is just a host inside Cletus while they share the same DNA.
The VFX artits wanted the appearance of the Carnage to be like a monster inside of a serial killer.
In Venom let there be Carnage the computer graphic characters are lead characters.
The animation style was very much dependent on Tom’s performance so it was very much important to know what was in his mind and what was Venom doing.
In this way Venom 2 became a very much appreciated movie by the audience specially for its VFX .
The VFX in the movie was a marvelous created by the team and made a everlasting impact on the audience.
The VFX artists in the movie was very much careful at what Tom and filmmakers expected from this film.
The VFX artist also looked into the development of key art and concept design to show into the look and lighting intent.
While creating all the blocking and concept art lot of ideas were incorporated of how everything looked and moved and how everything should be lit and how one should interact with light.
Various fan sites and comic book was studied in depth to get an idea about how the characters moved over years.
In fact the design work on Carnage was done with principal VFX vendor from DNEG art department to make designs.
While production hired concept artist to work on the character.
Dan Lu Visi who is concept artist tried to explore brutal anatomical transformation where we see the shared anatomy being broken and ripped apart.
One of artist made a wonderful masterpiece of art .It was seen that the Carnage body and arms have equal priority to tentacles.
It was named’’ Vitruvian Carnage ‘’after Leonardo Da Vincis drawing.
An in house concept artist Adam Burn made this .In fact he created key art that the film maker loved so much.
Audience have seen it in the film where Carnage is thrown back in the rose window in the third act.
In total Venom gave a everlasting and amazing effect in the mind of the audience with its stunning visuals.
It was a marvelous experience of the audience.
