What are Visual effects?
It is the assimilation of generated environment and live action footage to create a realistic imagery, that would be costly dangerous or humanly impossible to capture in real. Visual effect in its most basic form is a digitally manipulated image or footage. Computer generated imagery (CGI) have become accessible to film makers and computers are used to add or remove anything to everything which was not here initially in the original shot.
Software used in VFX:
After Effects- Adobe.
This programme is great for beginners. It’s primarily used for motion graphics i.e title introduction and logo animation.
Flame autodesk.
Flame run on its own operating system and therefore it is the most highly acclaimed composting software. It is used in client assisted projects because of its high level of interactivity.
Boujou.
This 3D motion tracking software is used for inserting computer graphics in live action footage with accurate scale, motion and position of the original footage.
3Ds Max.
It is a 3D animation, modeling and rendering software. Still pictures ,game environment and movies can be created with this technique. Modelling objects of multiple surfaces are used to create a three dimensional illusion.Groups of points known as vertices are created and connected to form surfaces using 3D technology of computer.
Cinema 4D –Maxon.
Cinema is a 3D modeling animation software. The working of this application depends on 3D technology of computer and is useful for making motion pictures and is extremely easy to use.
Nuke.
Nuke has the ability to integrate 3D models which makes it ideal for 3D composting and environments. The artist can can work with images having multiple color sample per pixel. Nuke and Flame are used by professional VFX companies.
Syntheyes.
This software provides complete high end features of tracking, motion capture and stabilization. IKt is similar to Boujou and PFTrack.
Maya.
Node base system has a strong ability about particles, animation , modeling ,rendering etc.
Mocha.
It is all in one VFX tool set for wire removal, mesh wrapping, lens distortion. Mocha Pro is designed for composting, editing and finishing environment. It is a powerful intuitive and innovative planar tracking solution which can easily manipulate and track shots which are not possible with traditional solutions.
Visual Effects Technique:
Physical Simulators.
This software is used to create Dynamical simulations. It are often used for big budget movies like 2012, I am Legend etc.
Matte Painting.
Matte painting is made by merging two or more images together to form a single image. Matte are used to combine a foreground image e.g. Actors with the background image e.g. Field of stars and planets
Rotoscoping.
It is process of manually altering film or video footage one frame at a time. The frames are painted to create animated effects like lightning, or traditional style animation.
Green Screen:
This technique is used for composting two images together. It is commonly used in video production where a color range in the top layer is made transparent, revealing another image in the background.
3d Modeling.
It represents three dimensional surface of object using software such as Maya, Cinema 4D or 3D Max.
What is Animation?
Animation is a technique by which two dimensional objects or drawings are turned into three dimensional lives. Animation is classified into cartoon and feature film animation , GIF animation, gaming software, 3D animation and visual effects.
Illusion of motion is created through rapid sequence of still images. The quality of original images is important, but the quality of the sequence in which the action , character and story is portrayed is equally important.
Software Used in Animation:
Blender.
3D Studio Max.
3D Plus
Aviation Master.
Lightwave 3D.
Elastic Reality and Avid 3D.
Maya.
Motion Capture.
Poser.
SOFTIMAGE.
Animation Techniques:
Keyframing.
Keyframing is extracted from a particular moment of still frame of animation sequence. For e.g. in puppet animation or claymation these would be the key poses and in pencil drawings, these would be the keyframe drawings. Once the keyframe is established then they are put into sequence by the technique called In-betweening.
In-betweening.
This technique involves creation of frames to fill up the gaps between the keyframes. They are of two types linear and curved. Linear interpolation provides equally spaced frames and constant speed between the keyframes, whereas curved interpolation is used to accommodate changes in speed.
As a beginner to animation and visual effects while picking up the program focus on your long term and short term goals.
