Finding Dory<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is produced by\u00a0Pixar Animation Studios<\/a>\u00a0and released by\u00a0Walt Disney Pictures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

Directed by\u00a0Andrew Stanton<\/a>\u00a0with co-direction by\u00a0Angus MacLane<\/a>,\u00a0the screenplay was written by Stanton and Victoria Strouse.<\/p>\n

The film is a sequel \u00a0to 2003’s\u00a0Finding Nemo<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and features the returning voices of\u00a0Ellen DeGeneres<\/a> and\u00a0Albert Brooks<\/a>, with\u00a0Hayden Rolence<\/a>\u00a0,\u00a0Ed O’Neill<\/a>,\u00a0Kaitlin Olson<\/a>,\u00a0Ty Burrell<\/a>,\u00a0Diane Keaton<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Eugene Levy<\/a>\u00a0joining the cast.<\/p>\n

The 3D film focuses on the\u00a0amnesiac<\/a>\u00a0fish Dory, who journeys to be reunited with her parents.<\/p>\n

Pixar\u2019s most successful\u00a03D film for about 10 years was \u2018Finding Nemo\u2019, and yet, other movies kept getting sequels while our favorite fish story didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

At last, in 2010, writer\/director Andrew Stanton got inspired. Five years later, on June 17,\u00a0Finding Dory<\/em>\u00a0came to the theaters.<\/p>\n

Stanton says that the last thing he ever thought he was going to do was a sequel to\u00a03D movie\u00a0Finding Nemo<\/em>, but the brain works in mysterious ways.<\/p>\n

Around 2010 he started to think about Dory.<\/p>\n

He knew she was a tragic figure when he created her and he couldn\u2019t drop it.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s usually the kind of stuff, when it keeps coming back without your trying; you realize there\u2019s something worth digging for.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening of the\u00a03D film\u00a0starts to paint Dory as the tragic figure.<\/p>\n

Things quickly lock in with the narrative of\u00a0Finding Nemo <\/em>and move on from there.<\/p>\n

The beginning of\u00a03D movie\u00a0Finding Dory<\/em>\u00a0was wonderful and sad, but it wasn\u2019t always what generally you see in theaters.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

Along with the sad beginning, we saw many scenes set in the Marine Life Institute, otherwise known as MLI.<\/p>\n

Dory\u2019s story mostly took place in the Aquarium, and there were some visually clever as well as funny scenes including the octopus Hank talking to Dory from a sink, Destiny, the whale shark meeting Bailey the beluga.<\/p>\n

Character writing \u00a0is quite \u00a0difficult but, when you\u2019ve taken a side kick who was suffering from \u00a0short term memory loss and turned her into the main character, \u00a0that\u2019s even harder.<\/p>\n

Co-director Angus McLane confessed dealing with that situation was maybe film\u2019s biggest challenge.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe wasn\u2019t built to be a main character,\u201d said Stanton.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was made to support someone else and a main character was a very different role.<\/p>\n

She was so wired to tee up everyone else and put the spotlight on them, and we kept falling into that trap.<\/p>\n

So it was hard.\u201d Like the scene in the touch pool. In early repeatations it starred Hank, the octopus, almost like an Indiana Jones-character, moving Dory long through the pool.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis biggest problem with this scene is it\u2019s not about Dory,\u201d McLane said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHank was really driving the scene as it started and finished with Hank…so the\u00a0 3D film changed to make sure every sequence was about Dory achieving her emotional goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

There was very little action with Marlin and Nemo.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarlin and Nemo are still very much in the film,\u201d said producer Lindsey Collins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re there at MLI.<\/p>\n

They\u2019re just not with Dory. But that was made intentionally because we wanted her to do this on her own.<\/p>\n

\u201d So even though Marlin and Nemo are around, they have less to do in the final\u00a03D movie than they did in original versions.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

\u201cHank was planned to be the side kick, the Anti-Dory, who can do things she can\u2019t,\u201d McLane said.<\/p>\n

Besides requiring an octopus character in the movie, the character of Hank was narrated to the\u00a03D animators<\/a> to be \u201clovingly curmudgeonly,\u201d When Stanton told the animators<\/a> his vision for Hank they had no idea what plot will be there for the character.<\/p>\n

They just knew what he looked like and how he has to move.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s only in research that things develop.<\/p>\n

So, for example, Stanton found out that some octopuses can even move around and camouflage themselves also.<\/p>\n

And that gave him a perfect instrument to get a fish around a human place, like an aquarium.<\/p>\n

Bones make\u00a03D animation<\/a> kind of easy.<\/p>\n

An animator can predict movement with them.<\/p>\n

But an octopus doesn\u2019t have bones, and that makes animating one exceedingly difficult.<\/p>\n

It took over a year of animation<\/a> work just to get the character\u2019s movements to a believable place.<\/p>\n

Hank\u2019s introduction is one of the most complicated shots in\u00a0Finding Dory<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Finally, 146 total versions from 18 different artists, completed it in \u00a0the course of 13 months.<\/p>\n

However, the good news is, once many of those problems were solved, things got easier.<\/p>\n

While \u00a0breaking the story of\u00a0Finding Dory<\/em>, the team created about 103,000 storyboards over the course of three and a half years.<\/p>\n

They created\u00a0 a new reel of footage for \u00a0four months over that time and that became the blueprint for the movie that\u2019s animated.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

When they were deciding about the casting of the movie, Andrew Stanton was always wondering how people would sound opposite Ellen.<\/p>\n

But, afterwards, he could see the chemistry she had with new cast members like Ed O\u2019Neill and Ty Burrell.<\/p>\n

Finding Dory<\/em>\u00a0has a very small crossover with\u00a0Finding Nemo,<\/em>\u00a0and the team more or less completely reanimated the shot to bring it up to the higher\u00a03D animation<\/a> standards of 2016.<\/p>\n

Supporting characters: Gil, Crush, Squirt, Mr. Ray, etc. many of those was back, but not all of them.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

Pixar loves to explore their\u00a03D animation <\/a>with each film and, on\u00a0Finding Dory<\/em>; they did it with several new pieces of software.<\/p>\n

First is Renderman RIS.<\/p>\n

Every Pixar movie has utilized the original Renderman software till now, so that makes\u00a0Dory<\/em>\u00a0the first film in about 30 years which was done on something different.<\/p>\n

Finding Dory is more advanced than the other Film in path tracing, which simulates light randomly, and makes for much more realistic water and other effects.<\/p>\n

Dory<\/em>\u00a0also \u00a0used \u00a0a program called Katana, which enhances the lighting, and Universal Scene Description, also known has USD.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learn a lot working on these films,\u201d said Pilcher. Basically, to make the movie right, the filmmakers have become highly knowledgeable about ocean matters.<\/p>\n

Pilcher said. \u201cWe are trying to take all the information from reality and reinterpret it in a somewhat manageable, simplified way that stylizes it a bit. Give it character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lots of aquariums all over the world were researched by\u00a0 Pixar\u2019s design team but the one in Monterey, CA the Monterey Bay Aquarium, was a biggest inspiration on the look of\u00a0Finding Dory<\/em>\u2019s MLI.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 3D movie is mainly about Dory, a fish suffering from short term memory loss.<\/p>\n

So the filmmakers wanted to make sure everything was seen through her perspective.<\/p>\n

\"3d<\/p>\n

By the end of this film, we should feel that Dory has grown up to be okay by herself,\u201d said MacLane. \u201cThat was the central driving idea we had\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the point of the story,\u201d Stanton added.\u201dShe\u2019s no longer the passenger, she\u2019s the driver.<\/p>\n

She has to learn how to do that.\u201d It\u2019s like worrying about a kid,\u201d Stanton said of making this\u00a03D movie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was worrying about whether she was going to make it.<\/p>\n

And I suddenly needed that resolved.<\/p>\n

So now I really do think it\u2019s a closed circuit.<\/p>\n
