An artist can imagine or fantasies anything beyond any barrier to give life to his creativity and make it fascinating.<\/p>\n

An Artist<\/a>\u2019s imagination lets one see many outlooks.<\/p>\n

No one knows the Origin of art, every Civilization every Culture has its own Art form, Style and Way of Imagination.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

Art form Evolved from time to time!<\/p>\n

And has reached to a milestone where we got introduced to Digital Art<\/a>! or\u00a0Digital Matte Painting.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s quite alluring to think about the transitions that art took in past decades!<\/p>\n

From Engraving designs on stone till painting on papyrus, followed by the synthetic brushes till a digital Pen Tablet.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

Ever wonder how those incredible scenes of panoramic vistas, impossible futuristic cities, or fantastic alien worlds come to life?<\/p>\n

It’s all through the magic of\u00a0 digital matte painting.<\/p>\n

If only I had a dollar (hey, inflation!) for every time someone responded, ” Digital Matte Painting?”<\/p>\n

Ages ago, extremely talented artists painted these realistic scenes on large sheets of glass.<\/p>\n

It really is a lost art nowadays.<\/p>\n

The painting<\/a> used to have blank areas that would get filled in with live action<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The filmed segments were optically composited with the painting for the result.<\/p>\n

A matte is a solid shape that is used to block out areas of the film<\/a> frame so that no image gets exposed there.<\/p>\n

A simple matte shot must contain painting with a matte to block out the live area, the film sequence with a matte to block out everything but the live area, and a final piece of film for everything to be exposed onto.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

Art in today\u2019s time has unlocked limits of imagination.<\/p>\n

Which became possible because of Digital Matte Painting.<\/p>\n

Digital Matte Paintings are one of the most important and popular techniques used in VFX Industry<\/a> for Film Making<\/a> to create illusions which are not even available in the real world or the Shooting Location.<\/p>\n

Digital Artist or we can say Matte Painters use many techniques to combine Digital Matte Painted image with a Live Action<\/a> Footage or a CG generated<\/a> Footage to complete a Fantasy scene.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not possible to pinpoint the invention of the matte painting. Since the mid-19th century, photographers were experimenting with double-exposure to create composite images.<\/p>\n

Magician and legendary filmmaker\u00a0Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s<\/a>\u00a0used the\u00a0matte painting technique in many of his films.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his 1898 film\u00a0Un Homme de T\u00eates \u2013\u00a0Four Heads Are Better Than One.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A glass pane painted with black was used to create a matte M\u00e9li\u00e8s.<\/p>\n

When shooting on film,\u00a0the black matte kept light from reaching the camera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Since a portion of the film was not exposed to light, it would leave part of the frame empty.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

M\u00e9li\u00e8s use to rewind the film and\u00a0use to set up an opposite matte.<\/p>\n

By removing the original matte and blacking out everything else, the film would now fill in the blanks.<\/p>\n

The resulting sequence was astonishing. Norman Dawn\u00a0used glass paintings\u00a0in his 1907 film\u00a0Missions of California.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Many of the missions Dawn was filming had been partially destroyed.<\/p>\n

He used matte paintings to visualize the buildings look whole again<\/strong>, often painting the missing arches or roofs.<\/p>\n

Dawn\u00a0would also disguise telephone poles as trees, as he illustrated below.<\/p>\n

Norman Dawn\u00a0is known as the inventor of matte paintings, but\u00a0he was just the first to apply for credit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From the source of\u00a0The Invisible Art: The Legends of Movie<\/a> Matte Painting<\/em>,\u00a0Dawn applied for a patent for his \u201cglass painting\u201d technique in 1911.<\/p>\n

But following a lawsuit it was deemed that the technique had\u00a0long\u00a0existed.<\/p>\n

Dawn was just\u00a0an early adopter of using matte paintings<\/strong>\u00a0in films.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

Alfred Hitchcock was using glass pane matte paintings\u00a0throughout the 40s and well into the 60s.<\/p>\n

They were prominently used in\u00a0North by Northwest<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Birds<\/em>.<\/p>\n

By the 1970s, the previously mentioned\u00a0VFX<\/a> masters at ILM would use many\u00a0 \u00a0digital matte paintings\u00a0to bring\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0to life.<\/p>\n

Star Wars\u00a0had a multitude of great artists, like\u00a0Christoper Evans.<\/p>\n

Evans created many of the iconic\u00a0Star Wars<\/a>\u00a0images, like Darth Vader\u2019s\u00a0imperial march.<\/p>\n

ILM also created the\u00a0 digital matte painting for the legendary finale to\u00a0Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em>. It took three months to paint all the crates and boxes.<\/p>\n

The last hand painted mattes used in a major motion picture was in the 1997 epic,\u00a0Titanic.<\/p>\n

Most production Houses has shifted to blue and green screens, the techniques used by digital matte painters are still applied to modern filmmaking.<\/p>\n

Background plates are often hand drawn or painted.<\/p>\n

They are used as reference material for the digital artwork.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

Digital Matte paintings are no longer a matter of two dimensional images.<\/p>\n

Entire 3D <\/a>sets, and backgrounds are created digitally.<\/p>\n

Even Professional digital cameras are used to add movement.<\/p>\n

There are still films that will use matte paintings as backdrops.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0Harry Potter<\/a> and the Prisoner of Azkaban,\u00a0six 100-foot canvases were stitched together and placed behind the set.<\/p>\n

\"DIGITAL<\/p>\n

Digital Matte Painters usually belongs to arts and designing backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Although a showreel of digital matte painting work can be called for, consisting of landscapes, set extensions and interiors.<\/p>\n

Images demonstrating careful skill in integration, match grading and an understanding of depth of field, exposure, scale, lens distortion and grain can also be presented as part of job applications.<\/p>\n

It is possible to move into digital matte painting with more of a blend of skills in 2D<\/a> digital preparation (prep\/paint) or junior compositing \u2013 particularly for people who show skills as part of their junior compositing showreel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Use breakdowns to show how your work was built up in layers and with color adjustments. Photorealistic<\/a> work is always in-demand.<\/p>\n
