href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Damien_Chazelle\">Damien Chazelle<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In the Movie First Man actor Ryan Gosling played the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neil_Armstrong\">Neil Armstrong<\/a> and the film\u2019s plot follows the personal and professional life of Neil Armstrong.<\/p>\n<p>Actress Claire Foy played the role of Janet Shearon Armstrong, Neil\u2019s first wife.<\/p>\n<p>Born on 1930 Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut, naval aviator, test pilot and university professor.<\/p>\n<p>In this film Ryan Gosling was groomed in short-sleeved shirts with short hair cut to get the look of that period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dneg.com\">Double Negative Studio<\/a> worked on <a href=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/12\/special-effects-visual-effects-magical-journey\/\">Special Effects<\/a> for this movie.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Lambert served as VFX supervisor and Michelle Eisenreich as VFX Producer at DNEG.<\/p>\n<p>This film received critical praise for direction, performance, musical score and Moon landing sequence.<\/p>\n<p>First Man\u2019s running time is 141 minute and the filmmaker used documentary style of shooing to give authentic look.<\/p>\n<h2>Contribution Of DNEG In First Man<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Cinematographer Linus Sandgren shot the film in three different formats 16mm, 35mm and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imax.com\">IMAX<\/a> 70mm film.<\/p>\n<p>The opening scene featured Neil Armstrong\u2019s X-15 rocket plane bounces off the atmosphere and landed up in Mojave Desert.<\/p>\n<p>After the death of his two and half year old daughter Karen, Neil applies for the project Gemini.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967 Armstrong was selected to command Apollo 11 for lunar landing.<\/p>\n<p>In the year 1969 Apollo 11 successfully launched at the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>After landing on the Moon, Armstrong drops Karen\u2019s bracelet into Little West Crater.<\/p>\n<p>16 mm format was used to get the inside scene of the spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p>35mm was used for the scenes that occurred in the Armstrong house and around the NASA facility and 70mm was used for moon sequence.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/17\/latest-techniques-trends-used-vfx\/\">VFX techniques<\/a> like LED Screens, practical sets, models and restored archive footage were utilised in this film.<\/p>\n<p>This film used modern VFX, updated old school techniques and extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/30\/steps-shoot-miniature-effect\/\">miniatures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6843\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/DpqqkzMW0AAqB0t-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Movie First Man @Animation Kolkata\" width=\"666\" height=\"373\" Lambert prepared a huge 35 foot-tall, 65 foot-wide LED screen for projecting 90 minutes digital image created for the film.<\/p>\n<p>There was actual footage on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LED_display\">LED screen<\/a> rather than green screen for the help of actor Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>Along with front and side views of the LED screen 360 degree images were also used.<\/p>\n<p>LED screen provided visor reflections and reflections on dials inside spacecraft.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6844\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\">NASA<\/a> had huge stock of film reference of its launches and space journeys, filmmaker took the advantage of such film stock.<\/p>\n<p>The director and his team collected every piece of archival NASA footage for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/09\/after-effects-visual-effects\/\">visual<\/a> references of Gemini and Apollo missions that was depicted in the film.<\/p>\n<p>The team discovered about 200 cans of 70mm footage at the Marshall Space Centre in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>Lambert and his team digitally processed, cleaned and extended the NASA footage shot on each side of the frame; such as Saturn rocket leaving the launch pad, engines igniting etc.<\/p>\n<p>Visual effects team at DNEG cleaned up the original 70 mm footage from the Apollo 14 launch which was added in the film to give cinematic enhancement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6851\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tmg-article_default_mobile-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"Movie First Man @Animation Kolkata\" width=\"690\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tmg-article_default_mobile-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/tmg-article_default_mobile.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Moon\u2019s surface was recreated by building a set on the Vulcan Rock Quarry in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>Vulcan Rock Quarry has a gray palette that matched the moon surface very well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6845\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man_lead-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Movie First Man @Animation Kolkata\" width=\"540\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man_lead-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man_lead-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man_lead-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man_lead.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Single light source was used to show that the light is coming from the sun.<\/p>\n<p>The cinematographer Linus Sandgren used specially built 15-foot-long, 200,000 watt lamp above 500 feet of the set to create the effect of sunlight hitting the moon\u2019s surface and to create harsh shadow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrw.com\/people\/christian-gelzer\">Christian Gelzer( NASA Historian)<\/a> and astronauts Al Bean and Al Worden were on the set as technical consultants.<\/p>\n<p>The team tried to match the space scenes in the film with the historical footage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/28\/effectively-execute-vfx-pipeline\/\">VFX<\/a> team emphasised on practical effects more than the digital glamour.<\/p>\n<p>There were 619 digital effects shots in the film First Man.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6850\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/suite-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Movie First Man @Animation Kolkata\" width=\"614\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/suite-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/suite-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/suite-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/suite.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Costume designer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Zophres\">Mary Zophres<\/a> collected period re-creations of NASA flight suits from Chris Gilman\u2019s Global Effects and Nathan Crowley the production designer recreated cockpits and space capsules.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/30\/steps-shoot-miniature-effect\/\">Miniature<\/a> model of Gemini 8 capsule and X-15 cockpit was crafted by the artists.<\/p>\n<p>Full-size cockpit was used for foreground, miniature for mid-ground and CG for background.<\/p>\n<p>In X-15 shot where Neil sees the horizon for the first time; the reflection on his visor is the actual reflection from the LED screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6848\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/FirstMan_X15_broll-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Movie First Man @Animation Kolkata\" width=\"681\" height=\"384\" 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A spacecraft model was mounted on a supporting device and synchronised to move in sync with the footage on the screen; astronauts\u2019 surroundings were captured by the camera in real time.<\/p>\n<p>The spin sequence for Gemini was created by rotating the content on the video wall rather than rotating the actors and actors also gone through skin tones during this shot.<\/p>\n<p>Camera captured the extreme close-ups of the astronauts and the interiors of the aircraft and spacecraft they were piloting.<\/p>\n<p>Double Negative restored archival footage one by one with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/09\/after-effects-visual-effects\/\">VFX<\/a> enhanced version.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6847\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man-vfx-saturn-v-model-30-1-ratio-1-1920x1080-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Movie First Man @Animation Kolkata\" width=\"623\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man-vfx-saturn-v-model-30-1-ratio-1-1920x1080-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/first-man-vfx-saturn-v-model-30-1-ratio-1-1920x1080-768x432.jpg 768w, Hunter\u2019s team from art department prepared the Saturn V rocket from PVC piping, acrylic tubing and forty foot high.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/30\/steps-shoot-miniature-effect\/\">miniature<\/a> were captured during shooting stage in Atlanta by DNEG.<\/p>\n<p>Visual effects helped to re-create the scenes digitally and then camera and crew were removed.<\/p>\n<p>To give the feeling of 1\/6th gravity DNEG added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/10\/way-cgi-changed-movies-generation\/\">Computer Generated<\/a> dust into the footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Stunt coordinator James M. Churchman attached the astronauts to a bungee system calibrator to show anti-gravity which was later removed in post production stage.<\/p>\n<p>The music for the film was composed by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Justin_Hurwitz\">Justin Hurwitz<\/a> and performed by 94 piece orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>First Man was premiered at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venice_Film_Festival\">Venice Film Festival<\/a> on August 2018 and theatrically released on October 2018.<\/p>\n<p>This film has grossed over <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Man_(film)\">$100<\/a> million worldwide against $59 million production budget and got 91st Academy award nominations for Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore it is evident that a lot of research, craftsmanship and innovation were put in the making of the movie First Man.<\/p>\n<p>Be a part of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/multimedia-graphics-3d-animation-visual-effects-gaming-vfx.php\">MAAC Kolkata<\/a> and explore the world of cinematic and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/advfx-plus.php\">Visual Effects<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today in our blog we are going to discuss about the film First Man which is a biographical drama directed by Damien Chazelle in 2018.
