Traditional Animation<\/strong>\u00a0is a process where each of the frames is drawn manually by hand.<\/p>\n

It is also known as classical animation or\u00a0cel animation<\/em>. This process of animation was followed before the concept of computer animation came into existence.<\/p>\n

\"Animation<\/p>\n

Every animated film starts with a story, which is derived from various literary sources.<\/p>\n

Normally the stories are short and interesting, the once that could be enjoyed by people of all age groups, especially the children. The story is then developed into a script, where the story itself is written in dialogue form. From the script a detailed storyboard is prepared.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0storyboard<\/strong>\u00a0looks very much like a comics where a series of thumbnail sketches are made to represent each of the shots in a sequential manner.<\/p>\n

Besides each of these sketches details of camera positions, duration, dialogues etc are provided.<\/p>\n

A preliminary sound track containing the music, sound effects and dialogues of the characters are recorded in advance. This track is known as the\u00a0scratch track<\/em>. The animation is then synchronized to this\u00a0pre-existing soundtrack. The other sounds, like the vocal songs of the characters are added during post-production.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0animatic story reel<\/em>\u00a0containing the sketches of the storyboard is then prepared to synchronize with this soundtrack. This serves as a guide for the animators and the directors to work out the script and fix any timing issues that may arise while the process of synchronization goes on.<\/p>\n

\"Animation<\/p>\n

The animatic reel along-with the detailed storyboard, once approved is sent to the animatic reel along-with the detailed storyboard, once approved is sent to the\u00a0design<\/strong>\u00a0departments.<\/p>\n

The character designers start designing the characters in different views and the background designers start sketching the backgrounds used in different shots, in details.<\/p>\n

The animatic reel and the storyboard may be changed if necessary and a new reel and a storyboard maybe created and reviewed by the director, until the storyboard is perfect.<\/p>\n

Once the detailed character and background designs are finalized and approved by the director, it is passed on to the\u00a0layout<\/strong>\u00a0department. Over here, the background layout artists determine the camera angles, camera path, the direction of the light and shading of the scene, etc.<\/p>\n

The character layout artists create the different poses of the characters as per the storyboard.<\/p>\n

Often an actor is hired while different poses of the characters are created.<\/p>\n

\"Animation

The layout drawings and the storyboard are then spliced to create an animatic, often known as the\u00a0 ‘Leica reel ‘<\/em>. The audio is also spliced along with it.<\/p>\n

The term ‘animatic’ was originally used by\u00a0Disney Studios<\/em>..<\/p>\n
