{"id":8103,"date":"2019-09-09T07:20:17","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T01:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/?p=8103"},"modified":"2019-09-09T11:31:05","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T06:01:05","slug":"animating-character-anticipation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/animating-character-anticipation\/","title":{"rendered":"Animating Character With Anticipation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here in this blog we are going to discuss about anticipation which is an importance aspect of <a href=\"mailto:http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/01\/the-art-of-animation-a-brief-history\/\">animation<\/a> while an <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/08\/7-ways-to-handle-insecurities-job-of-an-animator\/\">animator<\/a> is animating characters.<\/p>\n<p>As we all know that animation is a technique where images are manipulated to appear as moving images.<\/p>\n<p>Animated images could be hand drawn or computer generated imagery.<\/p>\n<p>The moving animated images tells us story through various actions and reactions.<\/p>\n<p>And there is an <a href=\"mailto:http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/04\/21\/10-traits-of-good-animator\/\">animator<\/a> who draws the every frame of character\u2019s action and reaction through his sketching talent.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation is just the introduction of an action that sets up a main action.<\/p>\n<p>The preparation for the main action is the anticipation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Anticipation In Animation\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8107\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/71-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"Animating Character With Anticipation at Animation Kolkata\" width=\"631\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/71-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/71-768x450.jpg 768w, https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/71.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During early <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/04\/voyage-walt-disney-animation-studio\/\">Disney Studio<\/a> days animators became aware that audiences face difficulties in following the animation if there is a lack of planned series of events guiding the eye.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/22\/walt-disney-eternal-voyage-success\/\">Walt Disney<\/a> told his animators to come up with ideas.<\/p>\n<p>He insisted on visual gags and wanted that the audience should see every action clearly.<\/p>\n<p>Walt Disney used to act the action himself so that the animators could clearly capture the effect.<\/p>\n<p>Les Clark one of the Disney\u2019s animator mentioned that \u201cToday it looks simple to us but at those days it wasn\u2019t. It was something completely new to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/01\/top-5-advanced-acting-tips-animators\/\">animators<\/a> worked hard to improve their drawings.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare the audience for an action, the animators started to add so-called anticipation drawing.<\/p>\n<p>The anticipation drawing allowed the audience to predict the main action in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>This process of anticipation made the appearance of action more realistic.<\/p>\n<p>The three major steps in any animation are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anticipation (preparation for the action)<\/li>\n<li>Action<\/li>\n<li>Reaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In animation; Anticipation can also be referred to as Preparation for an action.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Thomas_(animator)\">Frank Thomas<\/a> and <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ollie_Johnston\">Ollie Johnston<\/a> created the basic <a href=\"mailto:%C2%A0https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/30\/twelve-cool-principles-animation\/\">principles of animation<\/a> which includes Anticipation in their book named Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life in the year 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Both Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson were American animators and belonged to the Disney\u2019s Nine Old Men.<\/p>\n<p>Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life has <a href=\"mailto:%C2%A0https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/30\/twelve-cool-principles-animation\/\">12 principles of animation<\/a> among which Anticipation is the one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8112\" drawing which is the preparation of the main action of an <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/08\/amazon-developing-animated-kid-series\/\">animated<\/a> scene as different from the action and reaction.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation creates the perception of weight.<\/p>\n<p>From the picture we can be assured that the man has lifted up a heavy hammer to hit the ground hard; he stretches his hands and holds the hammer up to bang on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation is an attempt to generate energy to perform an action.<\/p>\n<p>While animating the character anticipation communicates what is going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>The main points about the anticipation are:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anticipation is always in the opposite direction from the main action is going to happen.<\/li>\n<li>Slower anticipation = faster action i.e. anticipation is slower than the main action.<\/li>\n<li>Action gets enhanced by the anticipation before the 546px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Anticipation can be used for animating less physical actions such as a character is looking outside the window to expect someone\u2019s arrival or waiting for a phone call to come etc.<\/p>\n<p>The anticipation technique has been borrowed from the theatre long back to hold the audience\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/24\/traditional-animation-vs-3d-animation\/\">technique<\/a> prepares the audience for what he\/she is going to watch.<\/p>\n<p><img href=\"mailto:https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Duck\">Donald duck<\/a> with raised leg whenever he used to run out of the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Donald duck\u2019s anticipation pose used to make us ready for the main action during the show.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><u>Animating With Anticipation Pose<\/u><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8113\" src=\"http:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/dc85bace39371bd760c1cd1636c1aef9-200x300.png\" alt=\"Animating Character With Anticipation at Animation Kolkata\" if the <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/07\/where-does-animator-work\/\">animator<\/a> omits the anticipation pose then there will be a feeling of surprise in the viewer and the result will turn into comedy effect.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation Pose prepares the character for an action such as jump or run or punch.<\/p>\n<p>In animation action happens very fast; for example a scene of throwing a ball will take just two or three drawings to make the action complete.<\/p>\n<p>These two or three drawings will not give the sufficient time to the audience to see the action properly.<\/p>\n<p>But if the character pauses for few seconds before the ball throwing action then the event will become much clearer to the audience.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation is key element in the <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/24\/how-do-you-time-animation\/\">timing of any animation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It prepares the audience for the main action.<\/p>\n<p>Stronger the anticipation more cartoony and smooth the animation will be whereas smaller anticipation will deliver more stiff animation.<\/p>\n<p>The character should think before taking any action in the <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/www.animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2019\/06\/24\/traditional-animation-vs-3d-animation\/\">technique of animation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" must first crouch down low and then push off with its feet.<\/p>\n<p>In the above image the <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/animationkolkata.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/16\/motion-capture-technology-makes-work-easy-animator\/\">animator<\/a> has drawn the anticipation pose for the jumping character.<\/p>\n<p>The crouch pose indicates the audience that the character is about to jump.<\/p>\n<p>Pose of anticipation gives hint about the thought of a character.<\/p>\n<p>Audience can easily get an idea about the action of the character (what he\/she is planning) from the anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>Action of character doesn\u2019t come as strange surprise with the pose of anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>Anticipation simulates real motion.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><u>Anticipation: Prepares The Viewer<\/u><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter odd if we jump without bending our knees or throw a ball without moving our arms back.<\/p>\n<p>Animating a character without the anticipation will make the motion awkward and lifeless.<\/p>\n<p><img come.<\/p>\n<p>It is used to direct the audience\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n<p>It makes the character\u2019s action more realistic.<\/p>\n<p>The above picture is another example of anticipation where a man prepares himself for the main action to cut down the tree.<\/p>\n<p>His posture and expression indicates us that he is going to apply huge strength to knock down the mighty tree.<\/p>\n<p><img etc.<\/p>\n<p>Many times anticipation pose of Tom used to give audience hint about the main action.<\/p>\n<p>Hence like other aspects of animation, anticipation is also an important part of the <a
